Poco se sabe de su m\u00e1s remoto pasado, aunque en su territorio municipal se ha encontrado material l\u00edtico correspondiente al per\u00edodo Calcol\u00edtico. Durante la guerra de la Independencia, la poblaci\u00f3n fue quemada totalmente por los franceses, al resistirse sus habitantes a los invasores. Perteneci\u00f3 al Castillo de las Guardas, hasta que consigui\u00f3 independizarse y constituirse en Ayuntamiento independiente, habiendo alcanzado la categor\u00eda administrativa de Villa hace pocos a\u00f1os. La extensi\u00f3n del municipio es de 45 km2 y su altitud es de 275 m sobre el nivel del mar."}
