Buses are the principal means of public transport and the main
routes in the west are run by Portillo, a company who at present
holds a monopoly and by Portillo and Alsina Graells in the east.
There are also some other local bus operators. Services range
from reasonable to poor depending on the route and few residents
speak highly of the service. Things have improved somewhat in
recent months, although buses still arrive infrequently and it’s
not uncommon to wait 45 minutes for a bus that supposed to come
every 20minutes.
The main centre for buses is in Malaga in a modern bus station situated in Los Tilos near the mainline train station and the Larios Centro Shopping center. The bus station has several small shops and cafés, a bureau de change and internet facilities. The Larios shopping centre is near by. There are several sevices daily to the main capitals in Andalusia and express coaches to Madrid and Barcelona. Coach services for Europe and morocco are available. Buses also depart from here to the main centres on the coast: Benalmadena, Estepona, Fuengirola, Marbella and Nerja.

Malaga has an extensive network of bus services run by EMT which connect most parts of the city with the centre. There are some 40 routes running from around 6.30am to midnight, seven days a week, although there are fewer services on Sundays and public holidays.
The bus service is currently undergoing
extensive modernisation, including the fitting of all buses with
GPS navigation systems.

Unless you live in the centre of a town or near a local train station, private transport is essential on the Costa del Sol. Although road communications have improved enormously in recent years, they haven’t kept up with demand. Since the mid-90s, traffic density has doubled on the coast, yet the AP-7 toll motorway is the only new road in the area and experts now forecast the A-7 will reach saturation point within the next two or three years.
