Costa del Sol - Information
Unless you live in the centre of a town or near a local train
station, private transport is essential on the Costa del Sol.
Although road communications have improved enormously in recent
years, they haven’t kept up with demand. Since the mid-90s,
traffic density has doubled on the coast, yet the AP-7 toll motorway
is the only new road in the area and experts now forecast the
A-7 will reach saturation point within the next two or three years.
Malaga, in particular, is in desperate need of a second ring-road,
a project that’s been in the government infrastructure pipeline
for several years, but has yet to materialise.
The far western side of the Costa del Sol is currently the least
developed, although this is gradually changing as more foreign
buyers are attracted to the area’s relative tranquillity
and in response to this, construction there is now intense, particularly
on the Casares and Manilva coasts. The area is less mountainous
to the west there are rolling hills with green pastures and vast
cork oak plantations, and several major rivers including the Guadiaro
at Sotogrande. Estepona is backed by the dramatic Sierra Bermeja
mountain range and Marbella lies at the foot of Sierra Blanca,
the southern end of the high sierra de la Nieves national park
where the highest peaks are over 3.000m.
The Costa del Sol in the section from Calahonda to Torremolinos
is the most densely populated and built-up. There’s little
unbuilt terrain left along the coast in this section and the urbanisations
and towns merge into one long urban sprawl. Within the sprawl
there are great contrasts merge into one long urban sprawl. Within
the sprawl there are great contrasts: low-rise urbanisations with
the emphasis on green zones and natural surroundings as well as
stretches of high-rise tower blocks reflecting some of the worst
urban planning in Spain.
The city of Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol, but is
in many respects a world apart from the thriving tourist resorts
on the rest of the coast. Malaga has few foreign residents, although
this may change in the near future as the centre of the city is
now proving popular with foreign buyers looking for an authentic
Spanish environment with services and amenities on their doorstep.
The Guadalhorce Valley, north of the city is already a popular
destination for foreign buyers, mainly residents, attracted to
the area’s impressive natural beauty and relative tranquillity.
This part of the Costa del Sol remains very Spanish and there
isn’t a large expatriate environment.
The Eastern side of the Costa del Sol has traditionally been less
developed than the west and as a consequence not so built-up and
less influenced by tourism. The area remains very agricultural
and there are now many stretches under plastic greenhouses. Most
areas on this side of the coast, both resorts and inland villages,
have retained their essentially Spanish character. This is changing,
however as communications improve and foreigners look for a more-Spanish
environment as well as cheaper property.
