Telephone technology on the Costa del Sol is as good as anywhere
in Western Europe and phone lines are available just about anywhere
in all but the most remote country areas. At present telephone
lines are provided only by Telefónica (the monopoly holder),
but calls are provided by numerous companies and there are some
good deals available.
You can buy mobile phones from numerous outlets on the Costa del
Sol, including supermarkets, hypermarkets, department stores and
specialist shops. Prices vary tremendously according to the type
and make of phone, the cheapest mosdel costing around 80 Euro
8including 30 euro in calls). There are three mobile phone companies:
- Amena Tel. 1474
- Movistar Tel. 1485 from a fixed line, 609 from a mobile
- Vodafone Tel. 1444 from a fixed line, 123 from a mobile
There are two options when it comes to choosing a mobile phone, and it’s wise to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages before you make a purchase:
- Card Phone – New phones usually comes with a fixed amount in calls already in the cars (e.g. 30 euro) and you top up the card when it runs out. Cards can be topped up for 5,10, 20,30 and 50 euro in numerous establishments including supermarkets, petrol stations, newsagent and specialist shops.
- Contract Phone – Similar to a fixed phone line and you must usually provide proof of accommodation and a bank account, as payment must be made by direct debit. If you plan to use the mobile phone a lot, experts agree that it’s worth having a contract phone rather than a card.
Rates for calls depend on where and when you’re calling,
and it’s worth shopping around for the best deal, as prices
can vary more than 100 per cent between companies.
