Capileira perched atop the Poqueira Gorge, makes a good base for
exploring the neighbouring villages and the back side of La Falda.
Its name comes from the Latin word capitellaria, in turn from capitellum, which means 'peaks'.
A long and hard ascent to Mulhacén is possible from Capileira via the refugio; however, soft core climbers might prefer to start from the more commonly-used base town Trevelez. Looming peaks tower over cobblestone alleys, with the distant valley below.
