This small village in the Bajo Guadalquivir is known because for more than three centuries it has celebrated one of the most mysterious and popular traditions in all of Spain.
At twelve noon on the Day of the Holy Innocents in the town plaza the crazy people dance producing a burst of music and colour. But don’t be afraid, every year on that day the women arise as protagonist of a mad dance that commemorates the day that King Herod ordered all the boy children of Nazareth murdered.
The dance symbolises madness pain and the anguish of the mothers
that try to protect their sons. Once its is over, a bear and tamer
appear, who present in the streets of the towns the supposed struggle
between man and nature. The tradition also says that the bear has
come to chase away evil spirits and negative energy from the village.
Without a doubt an unusual fiesta that preserves some of the old
central European traditions.
