Vejer de la frontera
Situated in the region of La Janda, a dried-up lagoon now used for
agricultural purposes, the town comprises two very different areas:
the coast and the interior.
The River Barbate flows through the town, creating a series of marshes
which have been declared a Natural Park and are the remains of what
was once one of Europe’s largest wet zones.
Vejer de la Frontera, a Christian border town in Nazari times, stands
atop a hill which affords a spectacular view of the surrounding
area and was originally built around the castle.
The town centre is charmingly beautiful, consisting of narrow, winding
streets of immaculately-maintained houses. Of particular interest
are the Walls, Divine Saviour Church and the Arch in the Jewish
Quarter.
