San Fernando Popularly known as "La Isla", it is
famed for its saltworks. It had Tartesian, Phoenician and Carthaginian
origins. The Suazo Bridge, still stands from Roman times. The traditional
architecture is very peculiar, with facades bearing wrought iron
gates and barred windows. Amongst its most significant monuments
are the Pantheon of the Illustrios Sailors (c.18th), the Iglesia
Mayor and the church of Carmen (c.18th). Of scientific interest
is the Astronomical Observatory. There is also the historic Court
Theatre, which acted as parliamentary floor from 1810 to 1812.
